World We Dare to Imagine Part 3 - This is Home Organization

In LA, the number of homeless people have increased exponentially from approximately 32,000 to 58,000 in just 6 years. In America, an estimated 553,742 people are experiencing homelessness on an average night. That is the reason why we found this non-profit organization called This is Home.

Our Mission Statement:
“To build a sanctuary for the homeless, both financially and spiritually, building a foundation for their future with endless possibilities"

My passion in serving the community—in particular the homeless people—stems from my past experiences in giving out dinner boxes to the homeless people in Hong Kong. I believe This is Home embodies my vision perfectly, effectively alleviating societal problems through constructive action.

My organization will be more than just a sanctuary for the homeless in the literal sense. We aim to protect the health and safety of the homeless on top of providing necessities, not to encourage permanent dependency on our organization but to provide the necessary temporary help that offers them a chance for a new beginning. Homelessness could be caused by many factors including lack of education, mental disorder, old age, family abandonment etc. therefore we strive to offer as much individual help as possible through counselling. Nevertheless, there will an emphasis on equipping them with necessary skills and knowledge to be introduced to the work force. Not only will we provide temporary shelter and food, we provide vocational training so they could find a job after going through the This is Home transformation process.

Apart from the direct aid we offer the homeless, we are determined to mitigate the stigma that surrounds the issue of homelessness. This is achieved by fighting for the rights of the homeless and petition for better government regulations to protect them. On top of that, we organize regular visits to the This is Home center for volunteers to allow people to experience first-hand serving the homeless, fostering empathy and social responsibility in our community.

Anima Mundi Development Partners should support my organization because our mission aligns with their philosophy of creating a better world proactively. As an organization, we value the virtues of empathy, kindness, and selflessness exercised through carrying out community service.
